Old signage found behind wall Gaping hole: Contractors have removed the brick frontage and reduced much of the building behind it to rubble. The two-storey building at the right is to stay. On the left, once the site of the Benge and Pratt store building remembered for tragic fire and explosion in 1914, the words J A Hazelwood & Co Ltd have been revealed. Photos: ROSEMARY McLENNAN By ROSEMARY McLENNAN Fire tragedy recalled Demolition of parts of the former Hazelwoods building has removed brick frontage and internal walls and revealed old signage. The words J A Hazelwood & Co Ltd were hidden behind the tall, green front- age of the landmark Main St building. Demolition work has been a talking point around the city as parts of the old build- ings have been revealed. Mall manager Martin Threapleton said on Monday the two-storey building at the north of the site would be kept. He said the hidden Hazel- wood s signage was unlikely to be retained because it was imprinted in a veneer over brickwork. Demolition contractors were expected to finish later this week. A new roof will be built over the gap to provide a single-storey building and work was on schedule for Defence staff to move in this spring, he said.
