Ever experienced the awkward moment that comes when you have to choose the wine in a restaurant and you have no idea which one to pick? Local restaurant Silverspoon revealed some of the secrets of pairing wine with food at their recent Wine+Food=Love event. The event was the first at Silverspoon since new owners Josh and Katie Chap- man took over the restaurant in late December. We were pleased with how positive the response was with the local com- munity of Silverstream and are cer- tainly looking forward to doing more events in the future,'' Mr Chapman says. The extensive knowledge used to pre- pare the menu, along with our trade- mark service, made for a great night.'' The event saw 40 diners choose from a specially prepared menu which included two entrees, two mains, and two desserts. Each dish was served with a wine selected by connoisseur Malcolm Macintyre of winesale.co.nz. The menu was prepared by head chef Alex Wilson who has been at the restaurant for three years. It included the restaurant's signature bacon-wrapped scallops, New Zealand's Lovat venison and creme brulee. The wines included the Georges Michel Golden Mile Marlborough Char- donnay, the Hop Kiln Single Vineyard Nelson Pinot Gris and the Mebus Estate Young Vines Pinot Noir. The event included entertainment by local musician Renee Coffey. Thomas keeps his lead Round four of a six-round tourna- ment was played on Monday even- ing at the Upper Hutt Chess Club. In the top group Ben Thomas defeated Bob List to maintain his lead. The second group saw Paul Bowden have a good win to have a half-point lead over Richard Cat- terall who had a drawn game with Mike Stevens. In a non-tournament game Gerald Carter triumphed over Bill Orr after an intriguing match.
