No to application By COLIN WILLIAMS An application from Experience Upper Hutt to create and build a Main St sculpture was the only one rejected for funding by the city s creative communities committee. Eight other applications to the arts funding assessment com- mittee were part or fully funded by the committee made up of councillors and community representatives. More than $15,000 in central government money was allocated to the successful eight groups or individuals but the rejection of the Experience group was questioned by councillor Dave Wheeler at Wednesday s services committee. Andrea Curtis, the city director of community services, said the decision went very narrowly against Experience and was largely because of a lack of suf- ficient information about the planned sculpture. The issue and the important thing to remember, is this is an external grant. The lack of design detail and the fact they did not have permission from Upper Hutt City Council about where it might be placed influenced the decision. If permission wasn t given then the money would have to go back to the government and we would lose it, Ms Curtis says. Questions came up that couldn t be answered at the time and it was put to the vote and it was very narrowly in favour of declining. It was mainly an issue of risk; this was a quarter of the funds, Ms Curtis says. She says a letter had gone to Experience explaining all the things we need for them to do to be a successful application . The creative communities com- mittee agreed the application could be resubmitted in the next funding allocation in August.
