Photo: SUPPLIED BY ARTIST Jacqueline Tuckey's latest works pay tribute to the huia bird that owes its demise to fashion. Tuckey's art works question the prac- tice of taxidermy and adornment with a tongue-in-cheek humour underpinned by the morbid reality that the art of taxi- dermy has had an impact on our native birdlife. This includes the huia, which became highly collectable in Europe after a visit to New Zealand by the Duke of York in 1901. During the visit the duke was pres- ented a huia feather for his hat as a gift. Reports of this gift in the newspapers in Europe started the demand for trade in huia feathers, which had a huge effect on a bird that was already in decline. The lower North Island was considered the last area in which huia could be found. These areas included Upper Hutt. The last official sighting of a huia was in 1907. Tuckey trained as a visual display art- ist and prop designer in the early 1980s, and by the mid-1990s she was working towards her long-term goal to practise as a painter and sculptor fulltime. This shift in focus enabled Tuckey to advance in her preferred occupation, in which she continually strives to develop her knowledge and skills. Fashion Victim at Expressions is a well-executed exhibition that has many special elements including works on can- vas, free-standing sculptures, sound and wall sculptures. Tuckey is a perfectionist and her con- ceptual art works are beautifully crafted with amazing attention to detail, says exhibition co-ordinator Chriss Doherty- McGregor. Complementing Tuckey's artwork will be a collection of contemporary jewellery by Deb Tuckey, who has created a diverse range of jewellery based on native and endemic birds in New Zealand -- living and extinct. All works in this exhibition are for sale. Fashion Victim is on until July 10 in the Vector Gallery. The exhibition can be viewed from Tuesday to Sunday 10am till 4pm.
