Some of the hottest jazz and blues talent from the United States and New Zealand will be performing at Expressions' Queen's Birthday Jazz Festival this year. Now into its fourth year, it is the only annual jazz festival in the Wellington region and attracts jazz and blues lovers from Wel- lington, the Kapiti Coast, Wairarapa and, of course, the Hutt Valley. The June 1 to 4 festival runs alongside the Manawatu Inter- national Jazz festival (May 28 till June 5), both organised by the legendary Rodger Fox. It's a desire to promote jazz and blues into a theatre environ- ment. Some people have a pre- conceived idea about the music being played in rather seedy pubs and bars and a festival elevates the music and attracts a wider audience,'' Fox says. This is especially so with a venue like the Genesis Energy Theatre at Expressions, which is such a good, well set-up theatre. It's also great that the local community supports the festival, and increasingly the wider Wel- lington public are seeing it's a great festival in a great venue. Jazz is such a wide musical style and a festival needs to be representative showing a cross section from blues to intellectual high end jazz. And this year we have some- thing new -- Cow Bop which plays an exciting fusion of jazz and country and western music. They have just been selected to play at the 2011 Monterey Jazz festival, which is a great honour,'' says Fox. This year's Expressions festival programme promises an eclectic mix of electric blues, jazz standards and high-end jazz by musicians such as New Zealand- born jazz pianist Alan Broadbent and the Tom Warrington Trio. The Tom Warrington Trio -- Tom Warrington on bass, Joe La Barbera on drums and Larry Koonse on guitar -- combine decades of performing individually and together at the highest level on the US jazz scene. Starting out in New York, Warrington played in the Buddy Rich big band for three years and has worked with many great New York jazz artists, before moving to Los Angeles, where his work is featured on television and movie sound tracks. La Barbera has played and com- posed for many great US big bands and his works have been recorded by performers such as Woody Herman, Count Basie and Sammy David Jr. Koonse toured the globe as a member of the John Dankworth quartet (supporting Cleo Laine) for six years and has been a fea- tured soloist with the L A Philhar- monic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. The Tom Warrington Trio and 101 Lab Band will perform at Expressions at 8pm on Thursday, June 2. See expressions.org.nz for tickets and more festival programme details.
