Tickets are selling for the Expressions' Jazz Festival's jazz gala starring internationally-renowned jazz pianist Alan Broadbent. The New Zealand-born pianist, arranger and composer studied music in New Zealand before moving to the United States in 1966. He made his name with the Woody Herman Big Band and won two Gram- mies for arrangements he did with Natalie Cole and Shirley Horn. He has also worked as conductor/arranger for Diana Krall. Also on the bill for the gala concert is Los Angeles trumpet player Charley Davis, whose diverse career spans more than 30 years and includes performances on soundtracks for movies, television shows, jingles, big bands, Broadway shows, and Las Vegas showrooms. Davis has performed with musicians such as Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra, Natalie Cole and Placido Domingo. Jazz and blues vocalist Denise Perrier, from San Francisco, will add her burnished contralto'' to the mix. She harkens back to the time when a singer told the story and left the rest to the instrumentalists. Perrier has been called the voice with a heart'' and sings ballads and blues with equal artistry. Add a dash of Wellington's best jazz talent performing in Rodger Fox's Wel- lington Jazz Orchestra and the Expressions' jazz gala, on Friday, June 3, is described as a night not to be missed. The gala is a great opportunity to see a mix of top international jazz performers and local talent. This concert is for the middle of the road music lover who likes big bands, vocalists and hot jazz,'' says festival organiser Fox. The Queen's Birthday festival, from June 1-4, features high end jazz with the Tom Warrington Trio (June 2), jazz with a country twang-CowBop (June 1) and a celebration of Wellington's blues scene with the Capital Blues Club celebrating its 10th anniversary (June 4). Now into its fourth year, the festival attracts jazz and blues lovers from throughout Wellington the Hutt Valley, Kapiti and the Wairarapa. The festival runs in conjunction with the Manawatu International Jazz festival (May 28 till June 5). See expressions.org.nz.
