The celebrations also mark 100 years of St Joseph's School, which began as an orphanage founded by the Sisters of Mercy. Festivities will include a cocktail evening on Friday, a centennial dinner the following day and a special mass on Sunday. Kate Pearcey, one of many organisers working on the event, says they have been planning the occasion for about 15 months. "It's been a lot of hard work. There has been a lot of community spirit. Father Ron Bennett has been a part of the parish for nine years and says he is very proud to be celebrating the 100-year anniversary. "It will be a very special occasion. "I think we are standing on the shoulders of giants. I feel very privileged to be among the descendants of the people who founded this community." There are many reasons why they have maintained a presence in Upper Hutt, Father Bennett says. "I think the school provides a really good education. The students do well in life and they contribute to the community as well. "It's a wonderful school and a wonderful community with many great things happening."
