Sunday 5 June 2011 Centennial Mass 10.30am Celebrant: Archbishop John Dew Pot Luck Lunch Expressions 12.00pm PROGRAMME What a wonderful Queen's Birthday weekend it's going to be. Celebrating a 100 year journey of faith which has made us what we are today. We have so much to thank God for and our founders, all those who have gone before us contributing so much of themselves in building our heritage, our faith community. And so welcome to all... Welcome to our Archbishop John Dew and thank you for the time you will spend with us, celebrating at all of our three Masses this weekend -- St Joseph's School Mass, the Memorial Mass on Saturday morning and the Centennial Mass on Sunday morning. Welcome to our priests and religious -- those still with us and those from the past who we know will be with us in spirit. Welcome to the staff, children and parents from our parish school St Joseph's. 100 years. What an achievement. Welcome to all those who have come to the Centennial of our parish and school. All who have come near and far on our two islands of New Zealand or from across the seas. While the church property on the corner of Main St and Pine Ave dates from the 1850s, it was the building of a new St Joseph's Orphanage by the Sisters of Mercy in 1910 that prompted Upper Hutt becoming a separate parish from Lower Hutt. The first parish priest was Father Leo Daly. A new brick presbytery, now owned by the Upper Hutt Club, was built during his time in Upper Hutt. Our Earliest Settlers "Peace and joy and fulflment come when we sow our seed, and sometimes we see the harvest, but even if we don't other people do and they are grateful. It is our gift to life and God." Irene Champernowne. (Faith of Our Fathers) Now Now: The organisation celebrates its 100 year anniversary this week. The parish continues to provide Upper Hutt residents with a place of fellowship, education and community.
