Both Maidstone Intermediate and Fergusson Intermediate are among 10 lower North Island schools taking part in the Maggi Intermediate Schools Kitchen Showdown 2011, which will be screened on TV3's Erin Simpson Show. Last year a team from Fergusson Intermediate won the regional competition with their decon- structed chicken lasagne, which qualified them to compete in the Christchurch final against teams from the South Island and upper North Island, and an audience favourite team. This year the pressure is on the Fergusson Intermediate team to also do well at the regional competition, which will be filmed at WelTec early next month, teacher Tony Webb says. There's quite big expectations on them, but the dish that they're doing this year's probably more technical,'' and the children are extremely com- petent, he said. The team of four has been practising at home and at school to turn out a perfect four servings of chicken kebabs with a spicy peanut satay and summer salsa with hand-made flat bread. Vice-captain of the team, Taylor Hodgson, 11, says appearing on television is very exciting, but the team works very well together and can handle the pressure. We have practised heaps, I love cooking, it's quite fun to do when you make it, and then you see people smiling when they eat it and you feel happy.'' Their strategy was to cook awesome food'', she said. Meanwhile Maidstone Intermediate are joining the challenge for the first time this year, and plan to cook a chicken noodle stir fry. It's very tasty and colourful,'' team member Jessica Quan, 12, says. Taking part would be a bit scary'' because of the television cameras, noise and pressure as they worked, but would be a good experience, she says. I'll learn quite a lot, as well as teamwork.'' Teachers and parents who had sampled the group's practice dishes had enjoyed it, she said. We've cooked it quite a lot of times to get the flavour right, and we mastered it a few days ago. So we just need to do the same thing at the com- petition.'' As well as regional finalists a wild-card team will be selected for the finals by judges after an on- line vote-off. A short video has been made of each team cooking and eating their dish, and can be viewed and voted for online at erinsimpson.tv Maidstone Intermediate foods teacher Priscilla Gibbs said the whole school was excited about the competition and would be drumming up a storm of online support. All the students are very supportive of each other, and they see themselves as being able to participate by voting,'' she says.
