'Whole lives' stolen By JIMMY NESS A young couple are devastated after their possessions were stolen and burnt under the Moonshine Bridge. James Wigglesworth and his girlfriend Mindy Stanley-Boden were attending a farewell party when their van, which has not been found, was stolen from Brooklyn in the early morning on June 16. Mr Wigglesworth says they had packed their most important belongings into the vehicle and parked it on Owhiro Rd, since they were moving to Auckland. We came back in the morning and it was gone. I was in sheer panic. Our entire lives were in that van. All of the good things that we had, and now they were gone. I didn t know what to do. Later in the day, the couple received a call from police saying some of the items had been found on State Highway 2. Thieves had taken the valuable objects and attempted to light the rest of the items on fire. Mr Wigglesworth says about $10,000 worth of property was stolen. His Warwick Streamer stage 1 bass guitar was taken, as was a bass amplifier and a MacBook Pro with three external hard drives. All my three years web devel- opment work is now gone. My entire life is digital in terms of what I do for a living. We have had to hire a car and figure out what we can take with us. We have had to rebuild our lives. The couple could not claim insurance because their insurance company said the items were in transit, he says. I thought, It s all going to be OK because I am insured . If you have any information, contact Upper Hutt police on 527 2300 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Thefts endanger Rimutaka drivers Who is this? Police say this man, described as of African descent, took a blue Giant Sedona AX17 bicycle from an Upper Hutt Mitre 10 Mega bike stand at 8am on Saturday, June 11. Twenty-four deep-cycle batter- ies were stolen from two LED vehicle message display boards on the Upper Hutt and Featherston sides of Rimutaka Hill Rd. They were taken on the night of Tuesday, June 14. The signs advise travellers of new road layouts and hidden queues in relation to the road- works on Rimutaka Hill. Senior Constable Flora Nielsen says driver safety could be com- promised by the thefts. If you were travelling over the Rimutaka Hill on that night and observed any suspicious vehicles or persons, contact her at the Upper Hutt police station on 527 2300. CHESS The fourth and final round of the current tournament was played on Monday evening at the Upper Hutt Chess Club. Winners on Monday night were Pat Cunningham, Gerald Carter, Anton Reid and Roger Smith. This left Carter and Cunning- ham (who drew with each other in round two) as joint winners, with 3.5 points out of a possible four. Correction A special viewing at Ascot Cinema of Transformers: Dark of the Moon to raise funds for local woman Natalie Murphy with breast cancer is on July 3, not June 3. For tickets, $20, call or text 027 303 0647 or pop into the Ascot.
