Unleash the poet within you Two free poetry workshops will be held in Upper Hutt later this month as part of national poetry day. Mary-Jane Duffy, lecturer in poetry and a co- ordinator of the creative writing programme at Whitireia Community Polytechnic, has agreed to be the tutor this year, and due to demand there will now be two free poetry workshops. These are part of Upper Hutt's celebration of New Zealand Post National Poetry Day on Friday, July 22, and are made possible by grants from Creative Communities Upper Hutt and New Zealand Post. This year's workshops will be held on Thursday, June 30, at Upper Hutt City Library, one at 10.15am and one at 1.30pm. We are very fortunate to have someone of the calibre of Mary-Jane Duffy come to Upper Hutt to tutor this workshop and expect that there will be a high demand for places,'' says Tony Chad, the Whitemans Valley poet and musician who is organ- ising the workshop again this year. Although these are free writing workshops, the number of places is limited. Places on previous workshops were filled very quickly, so intending students should complete a registration form and return it to the library as soon as possible.'' I will structure the workshops around a series of inter-related writing exercises that will work from starting a poem, writing it, and editing it,'' says Ms Duffy. The timing will help those entering the poetry competition which closes on July 8, says Mr Chad. Registration forms and information on the workshop and the poetry competition are at the library and Upper Hutt i-SITE Visitor Information Centre and will be on websites upperhuttlibrary.co.nz and upperhuttcity.com
