BE QUICK! Was $11,995 $74pw Business spark can grow into flaming triumph By NIGEL KIRKPATRICK, CEO, Grow Wellington COMMERCE COMMENT Wellington is an incredibly innovative region -- in arts, sci- ence, design, manufacturing, edu- cation; we re all justifiably proud of the successes our creative, resourceful region has had in the last few years. One of the best things about us is that there is always something bubbling away under the surface. There are great ideas that with just a bit of help are waiting to catch fire and become our next success story. Grow Wellington s Bright Ideas Challenge is about finding those ideas and feeding that fire. While there is a definite carrot offered in the form of a $25,000 seed funding for the best bright idea, the real value of an initiative like this is all the other layers of support it offers to fledgling busi- nesses that have the potential to become major success stories. Last year, as well as identifying a winning idea, some other out- comes of the challenge included 30 ideas being offered direct financial support (valued at around $200,000+GST) -- including legal support, intellectual property sup- port, marketing, advertising and branding support, research and development services. One idea has received private investment of $500,000 and another 16 qualified for Escalator 1:1 investment support ($2000 per idea). That s a lot of businesses taking a big leap forward. The winning idea in 2010 was an incredible product that assists stroke sufferers in their recovery. Called I m Able, this business is now based out at Seaview and id going from strength to strength this year. It s bringing money and accolades into the region and it has got big plans for the future. Assessments on this year s ideas have already begun and will continue throughout the next few weeks. Ideas will be refined and sharpened, support will be offered and introductions will be made. Bright Ideas will turn into bright businesses and Wellington will continue to bubble away. If this is all firing your enthus- iasm to come up with the next Wellington region success story, the challenge will return in 2012 but you do not even have to wait until then. Grow Wellington s dedicated regional business growth manager for the region, Grant Marris, is already working with companies and individuals across the Hutt Valley. Grant can be contacted on phone 939 9821 or email grant. firstname.lastname@example.org Stride it out By JIMMY NESS Baby brigade: Parents and their children blazing the trail at last year's July Buggy Walk. Upper Hutt parents are invited to meet other families and enjoy the beautiful scenery at the July Buggy Walk on July 7. The buggy walks happen around Wellington on the first Thursday of each month. The next event starts at Poets Park from 10am and takes participants towards Moonshine Park, up into Trentham Memorial Park, through Barton s Bush and along the stopbank. Sport Wellington young person s adviser Rachel Spriggens organised the event in conjunction with the Greater Wellington Regional Council. She says Wel- lington has a lot to see. There s no need to register. Just turn up on the day and take part. Walks are a great way for parents to experience some of the beautiful parks in the region while meeting other people. Participants are encouraged to enjoy the complimentary coffee supplied by Cafe L affare. Leashed dogs are also welcome. For more information visit buggywalk.co.nz. The website will be updated if there are any cancellations due to bad weather.
