The nature of city councils is to expand their urban base unless we stop it. Wellington is developing an 800-plus house subdivision near Newlands, called Lincolnshire Farm. UHCC seems to feel that it must follow suit with an 1800-house subdivision as part of its urban growth strategy which is an antiquated strategy developed in a time of economic boom and lack of recognition of the decline in oil. If urban development is really wanted (not needed, just wanted) then densify. However, in the end, continuing growth is impossible. At some point we have to stop. It is better to stop while our environment is still pleasant rather than wait till we have destroyed the beauty and practicality of the place. To expand so we can supply consumers for shops in the CBD is appalling. If you care about the last vestiges of rural flat and rolling land in Upper Hutt being destroyed then you have six weeks to do something about it. UHCC will change its mind if we loudly tell it that we don't want to lose the rural land. I want it kept because I like a balance between urban and rural land. It is not pleasant to see every last piece of flat and rolling land in Upper Hutt covered in housing. But most importantly I want the rural land kept for the future that is going to be very different from now as the oil squeeze digs deeper and deeper. I would like to retain the option of food production in Upper Hutt -- for ourselves and for Lower Hutt and Wellington. We need to develop a localised, resilient community that can look after itself. PAT van BERKEL, Pinehaven The Leader of June 22 and 29 contained articles about the proposed Sustainable village community'' at Maymorn. The word sustainable'' appears frequently but with no indication of how the village will be sustainable''. Will the council please outline what requirements will be imposed to make this village sustainable and how this differs from other parts of Upper Hutt. Personally, I feel we have an oxymoron here. The biggest threat to sustainability is population growth, and here we are building houses for more population growth on flat fertile land that could be used for intensive food production. BRUCE GILLANDERS, Moonshine 'Music' in shops My letter of June 22 obviously touched a raw nerve for S Bailey. His/her reply had all the hall- marks of a knee-jerk reaction. It made no pretence of responding to the message, but went straight into a character assassination of the mes- senger, a tactic known in some circles as the Muldoon gambit, after the late unlamented politician.
