35 UPPER HUTT LEADER, JULY 6, 2011 3839218AB 2011 Business Excellence Awards BEST PERSONAL BUSINESS Sponsored By: Experience Upper Hutt BEST PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS/ SERVICE Sponsored By: Expressions Arts & Entertainment Centre BEST TRADE Sponsored By: Central Community Newspapers On Line www.upperhuttleader.co.nz BEST EDUCATION BUSINESS Sponsored By: Upper Hutt Cossie Club RETAILER OF THE YEAR Sponsored By: Experience Upper Hutt EMPLOYER OF THE YEAR Sponsored By: Upper Hutt City Council EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR Sponsored By: Upper Hutt City Council BEST BARS/ CLUBS & PUBS Sponsored By: Metro Productions Ltd BEST CAFÉ/ RESTAURANT Sponsored By: Experience Upper Hutt SUPREME PRIZE Sponsored by: Centre strives for excellence Susan O' Sullivan: Her team won best personal business in 2009. New Leaf Skin Care was established in 1995 and they pride themselves on providing professional-trained beauty therapists who continue with post-graduate education and bring you the latest treatments techno- logy. They are members of the Association of Beauty Therapists New Zealand and recognised Dermalogica Skin Centres of Excellence. Run by proprietor Susan O'Sullivan for the past 10 years, the Upper Hutt branch strives to maintain excellence in skin care treatment and beauty therapy. Having worked as a beauty therapist in London and taught in a beauty therapy school, Mrs O'Sullivan brought a wealth of experience and knowledge to New Leaf which transcended to multiple business awards each year, including winning Best Personal Business at the Upper Hutt Business Awards in 2009. They have also been nominated for this year's awards. But her interest in the business came from professional prosperity rather than economic. ''I didn't buy New Leaf to make money,'' she says. ''I love bringing on new therapists that graduate from beauty schools; and see them grow and learn from experience.'' In her opinion, the passion and pride of the staff, exceptional client base, branding and the added advantage of laser therapy distinguishes New Leaf from its competitors. ''We have four therapists and two receptionists who are very friendly and hard-working. ''We also often get praised on hygiene and presentation, which is vital for our trade.'' Susan credits her success with New Leaf to the stiff competition in the beauty therapy trade. ''I think it is great that the community offers competition. ''Without competition we wouldn't strive for excellence.'' Awards venue Silverstream Retreat will be the venue for this year's Upper Hutt Business Excellence Awards. The awards will be held on the new date of Wednesday, August 10.Organisers say the change in venue from Expressions is due to lower sponsorship this year. ''Given this year's budget, and in order to maintain the standard associated with the business awards, Experience Upper Hutt selected the Silverstream Retreat as the best replacement to Expressions Arts and Entertainment Centre,'' says director Hellen Swales. ''Silverstream Retreat boasts ample space and ambience to suit the event and apparatus to cater to the guests...Subsequently the date had to be changed to August 10 to allow more time for the judging process to take place. But there are no other changes to the event itself. ''The semblance normally associated with the event will remain intact as we look to add a fresh element of rewarding excellence at the Upper Hutt Business Excellence Awards 2011.'' Tickets -- at Expressions -- are $65 per person. A table for 10 is $600 including GST. The price covers a catered three-course meal and pre-dinner drinks. There will be a cash bar. Firm hopes for win John Gwilliam: His team won best professional business in the 2009 Upper Hutt awards. John Gwilliam and Co was the proud winner of the Best Professional Business Award at the Upper Hutt Business Awards 2009. It has also been nominated for this year's awards. It is a well-established and suc- cessful Upper Hutt law firm with the motto ''bringing the law to the people''. They provide a full general legal practice with special strengths in litigation, family and criminal work. They work with you to provide the professional legal support and advice you need to get you through the tough times. Their aim is to de-mystify the law and lawyers, and give advice on whatever issues are troubling people. Established in 1992, the firm's pioneer -- Mr Gwilliam -- and seven others worked hard to promote an image of approachability to anyone seeking legal guidance. In their opinion, their provision of a high-quality legal service, being aware of people's needs and fulfilling them, and their free legal advice service clinched them the award last time. They hope the same qualities will win them others -- such as the Supreme Award -- this year. John Gwilliam and Co is joining practice with Fiona Butland, with whom Mr Gwilliam has worked for more than eight years, in order to combine their collective expertise and broaden their client base. 3839227AB WEDNESDAY 10TH AUGUST -- AT SILVERSTREAM RETREAT 2011 Business Excellence Awards
