Kai time: Sabin Vryenhoek, 4, tucks in to his hangi lunch. Each child spends a day as a rangatira, wearing a korowai, calling the roll and saying karakia as part of building up personal confidence. Last Friday was Sabin's turn. Photos: ROSEMARY McLENNAN By ROSEMARY McLENNAN A hangi lunch on Friday was the highlight of Maori Language Week at Heretaunga Kindergar- ten. Children enjoyed chicken, vegetables and stuffing paid for by fundraising and steamed in the Ruru Cres kindy's gas-fired multi-kai cooker. Children practised for a powhiri they will have next term with Brown Owl Kindergarten, learned mihi, and did Maori games and songs. Head teacher Sandra Tuku- kino said Maori was always part of each day, but last week they celebrated with a greater focus. The MP for Rimutaka, Chris Hipkins, read the children a story and was presented with a petition against early childhood funding cuts. The petition was signed by parents, and children had added their own handprints. WELLINGTON, LOWER HUTT & UPPER HUTT JOIN US AT www.lifestylegym.co.nz Are you wanting some 'me time'?
