Upper Hutt Leader : July 13th 2011
52 UPPER HUTT LEADER, JULY 13, 2011 RUGBY JACKPOT Crusaders blow it as frst Super 15 runs its course Ah well, in a few weeks no one will remember ... but yes, the frst ever Super 15 goes into the hands of those greedy, netball winning, Aussies. It's hard not to feel the Crusaders didn't blow it too, move away from the things they do well. Still, what would I know ... I was watching it and thinking there's the reasons Zac Guildford will never be an All Black again (the high ball errors, the bad attack options and that should have mattered but didn't terrible tackle) ... and then, less than 24 years later, there he is, in the ABs. Still, there it is, all done and dusted and an ITM Cup starting before we even know it (Saturday, with the Lions away to Taranaki, actually) and midweek games and whathaveyou all jammed in ahead of the, dare we mention it, Rugby World Cup (gosh). So, as today's page 55 story shows we have a jackpot winner in Paddy Kingi, a good keen man who is $1100 the better for his effort. In the business and expert selections there was a (if you are a trainspotter) exciting dead heat between Gavin from Gee & Hickton and The Leader guy. Martin from the Maul and Adam from the Hardware Bar were the late but academic big movers, having both gone for the Reds to win. The wooden spoon (so valued, so creditable) was cut and thrust affair too with Hamish from Gillies & Mark surging to head off the also consistently woeful John Gwilliam. Here at Leader Central we had a few average jackpot weeks too ... as we cleverly underlined the internal problems in the Hurricanes camp (although I believe some readers thought these were not deliberate mistakes!). As ever, it's thanks to all the business selectors, good sports one and all and to Rens and the mayor (who did get a spot-on, remember) for their 'expert advice'. And, closer to home, to Andrea T who cheerfully gathered up the business scores and tallied the points each week and to Janice H who, production wise, put together all the bits and pieces of the page now (what would we do without her, I wonder?)
