Photos: ROSEMARY McLENNAN Colourful murals By ROSEMARY McLENNAN You're welcome: Irmgard Ritchie Kindergarten's new archway and murals. Group effort: The MP for Rimutaka, Chris Hipkins, and pupils, from left, Sophie O'Hara, Tristan Hume and Curtis Wharekawa, cut the celebration cake. Looking on is kuia Hine Poa. Wild weather calmed long enough for the blessing and unveiling of an entrance way and murals at Irmgard Ritchie Kindergarten on Tuesday last week. An innovation grant from the Rimutaka Kindergarten Associ- ation kicked off the project and the kindergarten, in McLeod St by McLeod Park, fundraised for the extra $1500 needed, head teacher Rowena Echano said. The archway was designed by Orongomai kuia Hine Poa and made by Robin Christie from Childspace Early Childhood Insti- tute in Johnsonville, manufac- turer of children s playgrounds. Orongomai kaumatua Binny Andrews blessed the archway (tohu), watched by teachers and parents and about 20 kindergar- ten children. Two murals, designed as a team effort and painted by kindergarten mum Hana Masseurs, greet visitors as they come through the archway. The larger mural features hills, rivers and native birds. The kindergarten is now fundraising for a garden to com- plete the entrance.
