What's cooking? Samuel Fleming, 10, from Birchville School pretends to cook some bacon and eggs on his entry in the non-guild junior section open to entrants aged 9 to 12. Photos: DEAN PEMBERTON Hung out to dry?: This entry, placed third, was by Silverstream's Heather Cooling (Petone guild and associate of the Upper Hutt Sugarcraft Guild) in the mini-cake All Blacks section which required participants to produce a scaled down cake with a set theme for a formal occasion. Made from icing: Marion Saunders, of Upper Hutt, with her winning entry in the floral open Christmas fireplace mantel arrangement section. Mrs Saunders is a sugarcraft teacher and helped teach several entrants in this year's competition, including eight children at Birchville School. By ROSEMARY McLENNAN Cake decorators in the Upper Hutt Sugarcraft Guild came within three points of taking the coveted trophy from their Petone rivals at the annual regional com- petition. Petone finished with 37 points to Upper Hutt's 34 and Welling- ton's 32. Last year Upper Hutt trailed Petone by 14 points. About 10 guilds from around New Zealand competed in the Wellington Regional Sugarcraft Competition and Exhibition at the Dowse Art Museum on July 9 and 10. Upper Hutt president Leonie Pearson said the three-point sepa- ration was the same as last year and club members had won a swag of prizes. Mrs Pearson said her club was particularly delighted Michelle Nesbitt won the people's choice vote with her tall wedding cake. Ms Nesbitt won prizes with four of her five entries and the people's choice with the fifth.
