A weekend of celebrations and a public concert marked the 35th anniversary of the Upper Hutt Country Music Club. The club holds a celebration every five years. Friday was a mix and mingle, Saturday a dine and dance and on Sunday there was a concert at the Hapai Club featuring country music clubs from around the region. President Peter Jackson said the club was very pleased'' with the turnout. Thirty to 40 people attended the Friday night, more than 60 on the Saturday night and a good number of country music fans were at the Sunday concert, although only a handful of members of the public went along. Country music club members came from around the region and even the Hawke's Bay and central North Island. Zombie wrangler, 17 Night of the living dead: This scary zombie and many others will be on stage at Bats Theatre from July 22 to August 2. By JIMMY NESS Master zombie: Dominic Thomas, 17, won the chance to direct zombie play Disorder. Upper Hutt's Dominic Thomas is helping to direct a play about an outbreak of undead. Dominic, 17, won the chance to be assistant director of one of three plays in the Young and Hungry festival, which will be hosted at Bats Theatre. The contest allows people under 25 to be taught by indus- try experts in acting, lighting, sound and more. Dominic is working on a zombie play named Disorder with mentor Thomas Sainsbury, and says he loves every moment. It's been really, really good, I've learnt a lot. Everyone is so friendly. They talk to you about how to do certain things. He [Sainsbury] has given me ideas and how to develop them.'' Disorder has a cast of 16, struggling to survive in New Zealand after an undead apoca- lypse, Dominic says. There's this cosmetic treat- ment that goes wrong and people turn into zombies because of it. It's kind of asking society how they would react in a simi- lar situation. It brings different personalities out of people.'' The team has been practising three days a week, for about 12 weeks. One of Dominic's roles is organising the fake blood, which will be used on stage. I'm excited and nervous,'' he said. We are really looking for- ward to it, we think it's going to look amazing.'' Dominic is a student at Hutt International Boys' School and says theatre is one of his biggest passions. Previous Young and Hungry participants include Boy direc- tor Taika Waititi and Brett McKenzie from Flight of the Conchords. Young and Hungry runs from Friday until Tuesday, August 2. The festival includes three plays: Disorder, Johnny and Hearts Encoded. Tickets $16 per adult, $14 student, season pass $42 per adult and $30 per student.
