Students were selected by their school (one per school) as a top athlete and all round sports achiever. The course covered a range of sports related topics including leadership, nutrition, goal setting, ftness and specifc sports skills. Sports targeted for 2011 were rugby, soccer, softball and swimming. In addition students were exposed to numerous exercise challenges, games and activities including visits to the Hurricane's training, local gym's, and H20 Xtream. The 2011 coordinator said, "It was such a great opportunity to work with a group of young gifted and talented sports people. The programme had a good balance of coaching, teaching and role modelling. I feel that this type of programme is a great way for talented students to gain confdence in their abilities and potential."GATE is the starting point for the pathway of high achievers in Upper Hutt, providing a lead in to Intermediate and College programmes. Activation organises the programme, relying on external funding to ensure it continues. For 2011, Lions Foundation were again the funders. The benefts of GATE are there for all to see with students learning, experiencing and excelling in sports activities. Parents too see the great opportunity that this course provides, one commenting that, "My son experienced 'one of the best weeks of my life!' You can't really top that! As a parent whose child has had this wonderful opportunity all I can say is a HUGE thank you." 2011 Wellington Junior Age Groups Upper Hutt Squash Club is hosting the 2011 Wellington Junior Age Groups squash tournament from 7 to 10 July.
