Good day: It was a successful contest for Nicola Wheeler, the youngster placing second in the individual section as well as being part of the winning group. Lithe and limber: Rachael Turner shows her flexibility during her routine at the Interschool Aerobics Competition last week. Rachael's performance earned her third place in the individual section. High energy and slick routines ensured Maidstone Intermediate dominated the annual Inter- school Aerobics Competition held in Lower Hutt last week. Blending rhythmic aerobic exercise with stretching, strength moves, cardio-vascular fitness and toe-tapping music, the event attracted more than 50 competi- tors from throughout the region. It's really good to see kids having a go at a different sport and enjoying it,'' said event com- pere and Federation of Inter- national Sports, Aerobics and Fit- ness Inc (Fisaf) international head judge Tanya Houpt. Maidstone Intermediate showed the results of working with their coach, Rochelle Rocky'' Harrison, taking out six of the top nine placings. At Maidstone, aerobics has become more popular each year,'' said teacher/manager Sasha Robinson. In 2009 which was the year I took over aerobics, we only had 12 students interested, the next year 40 students and then this year we had around 60 pupils trial to be part of the 15-member squad. The sole male competitor, Matiu Samuel from Stokes Val- ley, known for his award-winning dancing, showed his class, taking out top place in the individual section.
