June library usage compared with the same month a year earlier shows big increases in all the main statistical areas, particularly with inquiries. These increased a massive 75.7 per cent from 2804 to 4926. ''The size of this increase is a direct reflection of the success of the library's new layout which allows staff to spend far more quality time with our customers,'' notes to a recent council committee say. Visitor numbers continued their big rise, increasing 18.7 per cent (to 28,654) while the Pinehaven branch also recorded an increase with a more modest 5.1 per cent return. Items issued increased by nearly 16 per cent overall while new registrations for the month improved by 31.5 per cent to 284. Great unveiling: Parents and children start to pull off the white wrapping on the bus. Copies of these and other pictures from the event can be viewed and prints ordered at pix.ccn.co.nz. Photos: PETER McDONALD A new look, and very purple, mobile library was unwrapped'' by keen book-loving youngsters on Sunday. The bus, after three months' absence, was covered in white paper and enthusiastically opened to reveal its new colour and a range of improvements. It's refurbished but it will look like a new one,'' city community services director Andrea Curtis told councillors ahead of the launch. It feels like you are in the new library except without the comfy chairs. And there's no back door but there is a back window.'' The mobile, which had been off the road since late April, resumed normal services on Monday with its regular run including two new childcare centres, Childhood Con- cepts and Happy Days. A van was used to provide bulk loans to customers while the bus was off the road for the makeover. The bus reaches customers with the least ability to access either the Central or Pinehaven libraries and is is a key part of the overall library service. In the year to March it had 17,800 visitors and issued more than 27,300 books.
