Photo: ROSEMARY McLENNAN By ROSEMARY McLENNAN The warmer climate of Tauranga beckons for Dave and Leigh Good- man, who have sold their Upper Hutt Tyres business. New owner Rob Cuneen of mobile tyre service Tyres2U took over on Monday. He will have a month's overlap with the Good- mans, who will move north after they sell their house. The Goodmans have seen huge changes in the tyre industry since they set up their independent tyre business in June 1980 on Brown St, and moved to the former Benge's Garage on Princes St in 1993. It is a site with a motor trade history. Benge's Garage had been there since 1937. The Goodmans will continue to own the land and buildings. Since tyre manufacturing in New Zealand ended, businesses have no control over the supply of imported tyres to a small market, in comparison with other countries, Mr Goodman says. The range of sizes and profiles has increased and sometimes it is difficult to get customers the tyres they want, especially at short notice, he says. Mr Goodman also says most tyres are not made especially for New Zealand conditions. But on the positive side, tyres are cheaper than they used to be, he says. Mr Goodman says they will miss their customers. Some have been with them for 30 years even though they have moved to the Wairarapa and Kapiti. Their customers have become friends. We are leaving people that we have dealt with for a long, long time. That will be a wrench, the thing I will really miss,'' he says. But they will not miss the chal- lenge of staying warm at work on Upper Hutt's cold days. When they moved in they shifted the doors from Princes to Geange St because the southerly blew in and straight out the door on the opposite side. As well as a warmer climate in Tauranga Mrs Goodman has a sis- ter there. Mr Goodman plans to work two or three days a week in a tyre shop. A member of the Early Amer- ican Car Club, Mr Goodman has a 1939 Chev Coupe, which he restored himself, and the couple are looking forward to time to take it on outings in Tauranga.
