Upper Hutt Parents’ Centre is holding their event at the Fig Tree cafe in Trentham from 10am. The first 20 mothers to register on the day will be able to select an item from the goodie table and there will also be spot prizes. And in Stokes Valley local chari- table trust Wharekai Pepe, which provides breastfeeding support, is holding its event at Koraunui Marae, in Stokes Valley Rd behind St Francis Xavier Catholic Church, from 10am. Morning tea will be pro- vided and there will be spot prizes. The Big Latch On is about celebrating the benefits of breast- feeding and to send a message that breastfeeding in public is acceptable and supported, organisers say. Since 2005 the number of women participating in the Big Latch On has increased annually and last year New Zealand recorded 1514 women breastfeeding simultaneously. Organisers anticipate that even more mothers will take part in 2011, contributing to the highest number recorded to date. ❚ For more information on the event see womens-health.org.nz Salute named top day spa in the country A business owned by Heretaunga resident Carl Manderson has been named the country’s top day spa. A judging panel has picked Lower Hutt-based Salute Hair and Day Spa as the best day spa in New Zealand. The trophy was presented to Mr Manderson at a black-tie New Zealand Beauty Industry Awards gala event in Auckland on July 19. Judges praised the day spa in Queens Dr as ‘‘world class’’ and said, despite the very high stan- dard of entries, Salute was the clear winner. One of the judges said the standard of entries in the day spa section was ‘‘seriously impressive’’. ‘‘They not only far exceeded my expectations, but in some cases were better presented and thought through than most corporate business plans.’’ Mr Manderson said he and his team were thrilled to win. ‘‘We’ve worked really hard creating something different and special for Lower Hutt and Welling- ton and to be acknowledged on a national level is very humbling.’’ Manderson, a past winner of the Schwarzkopf NZ Hairdresser of the Year Award, said there was a time when people had to go offshore to find a day spa experience that was really special – ‘‘but that has definitely changed’’. Helen Wilkes 04-939 6058 76 Gibbons Street, Upper Hutt 2881327AG Food, glorious food Welcome return: Rob Cowan with the Mary had a Little Lamb burger he created with wife, Bernice. Photo: ROSEMARY McLENNAN The popularity of a beef burger created for last year’s competition is behind May- fair Cafe’s Mary had a Little Lamb effort this year. The restaurant does not usually do burgers so its first day on the Visa Wel- lington on a Plate menu will be this Friday. Owner and chef Rob Cowan and his wife, Bernice, created the burger, using as many local ingredients as possible. The lamb and Kingsmeade halloumi are from the Wairarapa. The burgers include beetroot confit and lettuce, on a Spanish-style burger served with fries for $17.50 . Mr Cowan says several bookings have been made already. Mayfair Cafe is open daily but only Thursdays to Saturdays for dinner. Phone the cafe to book. Other local participants are Bell House (dinner only), the Tote and Furnace (August 17, boutique beers matched with food, $50), Kiwi Bush Tucker for Kids at Staglands (August 14, $20) and The Short Straw Cafe in Johnsons Rd, Whitemans Valley, which has children’s superheroes and super treats Saturdays on August 6 and 13. For $12 a child can take part in a half-hour play workshop and receive a super treats platter. Workshops include Superheroes, Alice in Wonderland, Royal Ball and a Down on the Farm adventure. Workshops include dress-ups, role play activity and a craft or cooking activity. Phone 528 7884 or email short.straw- @hotmail.com to book.
