There will be many events in our city and across the region that we should all embrace, enjoy and partici- pate in. This Rugby World Cup is not only about the rugby but it is about hosting visitors to our country, making sure their time is enjoyable and that we, as citizens, enjoy all the events that take place. Let us make sure that visitors to Upper Hutt have a great time. We can all put our city on the international stage. Let's go out of our way to welcome these visitors. Last week we launched the results of the 2010 Hutt Valley Youth Survey. This is the first time that this survey has been jointly carried out by Hutt City Council and Upper Hutt City Council. Previous to this Upper Hutt City Council has carried out three surveys on its own. This is a comprehensive view of the wellbeing of the young people in our area. The results of the survey will form the basis of the two city councils working together in collaboration with other agencies to make sure we get it right for young people. There are some answers that will pose a challenge for our communities but I can assure you that we are prepared to address these issues and we at Upper Hutt City Council, along with other active stakeholders, have already been having meetings to discuss how we can work together to find solutions, at least to some of the issues raised in these surveys. Young people are vital to the future of our region, particularly our cities, and we need to make sure that their experiences as they grow up and develop and contribute to our community are positive. Interesting to note that the three areas that were highlighted in this survey most frequently as needing major improvement were: Places to hang out, job opportunities and leisure opportunities. Responses said that improvements over the last year have been made in leisure activities and places to hang out, but that there had been a deterioration over the past year in job opportunities. Finally I urge you all to read the report and look for ways that you can support our young people. We will continue to listen to all ages in our com- munity and as a result Upper Hutt will grow and create opportunities for us all. Heritage tour focuses on sport A bus tour of heritage sports locations in Upper Hutt is planned as part of September's Heritage Month. Each year the Wellington Region Heritage Promotion Council co-ordinates a month of displays and events throughout Wellington, Kapiti, Hutt Valley, Porirua and Wairarapa. This year's theme is sport and recreation, coinciding with the start of Rugby World Cup events next month. Christine O'Leary, from the Upper Hutt i-SITE Visitor Centre, is hosting the belt-up, gallop-on, tea-off tour'' on Monday, September 5. It will leave at 12.30pm from the Upper Hutt railway station and visit the National Rifle Association headquarters at Trentham to view New Zea- land's oldest sporting trophy, the Ballinger Belt, then visit the Wellington Racing Club and end with a tour and afternoon tea at the Royal Wellington Golf Club in Heretaunga. Cost is $10 per person, book- ings essential at the Upper Hutt i-SITE Visitor Centre, 90 Main St, ph 527 2141. The centre also has copies of the heritage month brochure with details of activities.
