Photo: NATALIE FRIEND Opening this week in the Vec- tor Gallery at Expressions is Te Manu Karere, new works by painter Victor Te Paa. The exhibition is a series of paintings that use design elements from Asia and the Pacific. Te Paa is of Maori and Tongan decent, which is evi- dent in the use of Maori kowhaiwhai and the rectilin- ear patterning that features in his work. Te Paa is known mostly for his meticulous paintings portraying Maori women -- wahine -- adorned in intricately patterned and decorated cloaks. In this new work he has included imagery of birds while maintaining a feminine element. The wahine are protected and enveloped by the cloak and bird forms, which are composed within a sometimes dark and ominous landscape. In 1997 Te Paa began Maori art and design under head tutors Manos Nathan, Allen Wihongi and Gary Whiting at the Northland Polytechnic in Whangarei. In 2002 he moved to Gisborne and completed a Diploma of Maori Visual Arts and Design at Toihoukura, Te Tairawhiti Polytechnic, under head tutors Derek Lardelli and Steven Gibbs. Te Paa graduated in 2006 as an inaugural student of the Maunga Kura Toi -- Bachelor of Maori Arts degree at Toi- mairangi School of Maori Vis- ual Culture, Te Wananga O Aotearoa, in Hastings under head tutor Sandy Adsett. He moved to Wellington to concentrate on his art practice and become a fulltime artist. His work is in galleries in New Zealand and overseas and in private collections. Te Manu Karere is open until Sunday, October 23, in the Vector Gallery.
