Motorbike class finds new home Final approval for the regular closure of Upper Hutt’s railway commuter park for motorcycle rider training sessions will not be given because it is no longer required. Ahead of the confirmation of city approval on Wednesday, the private business operator, Leigh Elliot, informed the council he had found another preferred location for the weekend training of students on motorcycles under 250cc. Mr Elliot has written to the council to formally withdraw his plans. ‘‘I have since been able to secure an alternative site that, I believe, is more suitable for the instruc- tion of motorcycle basic-handling skills,’’ the letter says. He is now finalising negotiations to begin his business on private land. The city railway park, behind the central library, was set for a three-month trial of fort- nightly Saturday closures of five hours for the business while a site rental was negotiated by Mr Elliot. Councillors were supportive of the initiative but were also concerned that it might have caused some negative impact to the city library and Expressions. Idiot archer: This ewe belonging to Totara Park farmer Martin Bradley is recovering after surgery to remove this arrow from her lower jaw and throat. Mr Bradley says the ‘‘sadistic act’’ was committed on the afternoon of Monday, August 8, and would have caused pain and distress to the sheep, which is feeding twins, and would not have been able to eat. Mr Bradley says council dog ranger Brian O’Neill helped him catch the sheep and was appalled by the attack. Mr Bradley has reported the attack to police. Fractured fractions Technical issues dropped all fractions in last week’s slow cooker recipes. Many references to quarter and half cups became just ‘‘Cup’’. Corrections are: Coffee braised beef rump, quarter cup fine ground espresso coffee, half tsp each ground cumin, coriander and black pepper, half cup tomato sauce, quarter cup brown sugar, quarter cup Worcester- shire sauce. Slow-cooked chicken laska, half red pepper. Carrot loaf, three-quarters cup sugar, quarter cup milk, half cup canola oil, one and a half cups grated raw carrot, one and a half cups plain flour, half tsp baking soda. Entries for the book draw close this Friday.
