Dam buster: Upper Hutt local Abbey- May Wakefield, 13, abseils on a dam during Operation Hero. From skydiving to swimming with sharks, two Upper Hutt teens have enjoyed the ultimate adven- ture on television. Chris Buckham, 14, and Abbey- May Wakefield, 13, appear in the 10-episode programme Operation Hero, which began on television last Sunday. Six children compete in the show tacklingexciting physical and mental challenges. Chris, who lives in Totara Park, says auditions were held for a role in the show earlier in the year. They seemed really impressed. I waited two or three days and I got a call saying I got the part and that was that. Before I knew it, I was up in Auckland.'' The show was filmed over two weeks in Albany and Palmerston North. Abbey-May, who lives in Tren- tham, says it was the most fun she has ever had and she wishes she could do it all over again. We did all sorts of challenges like jumping out of a plane at 12,000 feet, eating raw squid, abseiling down a 50-metre dam and also being a tank with sharks circling around it, but there is much more on this epic series which I will keep a surprise.'' Both children say they would like to continue acting in the future. Chris has appeared in several short films and the play Waiting For Godot, which starred Sir Ian McKellen. This is a really good start for me and I am really hoping this will push my future in my career,'' Chris says. Abbey-May has also acted pre- viously and played a vampire in the film 30 Days of Night. When I grow up, I would love to continue what I am doing now as a career and also be a part-time director as the crew of Operation Hero inspired me to be,'' she says. The programme airs on TV2 on Sunday at 5pm.
