Daffodil rallies cancer funds Bright and early: Daffodil Day helpers Ian Pearless and Kathryn Hicks with arms full of daffodils, bags and balloons on Friday morning. Mr Pearless, roped in by his wife Olive, had just returned from collecting daffodils from the Mangaroa Valley properties of Bob Lendrum and the Hoddinott family. Photo: ROSEMARY McLENNAN By ROSEMARY McLENNAN Upper Hutt shoppers kept Main St s Daf- fodil Day store busy last week. Upper Hutt is one of the few places to have a temporary shop. Use of the former Dowson s shoe store was provided free by the building owner. Upper Hutt Rotary helped with publicity costs. Local Daffodil Day committee member Kathryn Hicks said sales of promotional stock had been good. The teddy bear was party girl Millie pro- moting the annual event s 21st birthday. There were also Cancer Society shopping bags available to be sold for the first time. Collection tables had been well-supported by donations, she said. Ms Hicks is likely to take over next year from Jeremy and Rosemary Wright, who have been co-ordinators for several years. Satisfied shoppers: John and Lesley Upton filled their trolley after Silverstream New World's grocery grab. Photos: JIMMY NESS Mad dash to fill trolley By JIMMY NESS Sprint shopping: Lesley Upton throws two boxes of fish burgers into her trolley while Nestle employees Danny Black and Brent Havis provide helping hands. A mad dash around a supermarket with 90 seconds on the clock was resident Lesley Upton s unusual prize last week. Mrs Upton filled her trolley with $500 of free products at Silverstream New World on Thursday. She says she was nervous about the grocery grab, but she did not hold back once the timer started. I was definitely apprehensive about it all. I guess it was probably the shortness of the time. I was not thinking, I was just grab- bing. I thought, I ve got no time to look at what these things are, just grab! She entered the competition in July through buying a Nestle product and swiping her Fly Buys card. Mrs Upton says she was absolutely surprised by the win. I didn t know it was even running. It was just my normal shop. I ve shopped here for 40 years and it s paid off. Mrs Upton walked around the store and came up with a plan of attack before starting the 90-second sprint. She focused on frozen food and meat, and a Nestle employee pushed her trolley. Nestle regional business manager Danny Black says it was his 24th grocery grab and all sorts of people have won the competition. Everyone from early 20s through to early 80s. We have had some people go straight to health and beauty and just take their time, and some people just panic and have been like a startled deer in the headlights. Mrs Upton says she got nearly every- thing she wanted, but had to buy vegetables afterwards.
