Upper Hutt Leader : August 31st 2011
15 UPPER HUTT LEADER, AUGUST 31, 2011 gardening TIPS green growing Upper Hutt green fingers gardening competition sponsored by Mitre 10 Mega Upper Hutt 9 Park Street Ph 527 2227 Opening Hours: Monday - Friday: 7.00am - 6.00pm. Saturday, Sunday & Public Holidays: 8.00am - 6.00pm Welcome to September and with that SRING has arrived and gardeners are rejoicing. Lights! Camera! Action! FLOWERS & FRUIT TREES: Officially it is Spring - buds, shoots, and flowers are emerging but remember cold temperatures and wet weather are fairly typical of September. Make preparations for your summer flowering annuals, but look out for those late frosts. Mulch shrubberies, rose gardens and perennial borders with peat or compost and fertilise your roses. GREEN FINGER TIP: If you grow roses maintain early season fungicide cover sprays. Green Aphids can also infest young growth so also include an insecticide. Feed & mulch fruit trees use compost or other organic matter to mulch. Try not to cultivate too much as you may damage fine surface roots. Bees are essential for pollinating fruit and vegetable crops. Plant Herbs - parsley, fennel or dill sage, lavender and thyme to attract the bees. If you have never had a compost bin before now is a good time to start one. There are a vast variety of compost bins available at Mitre 10 Mega including wooden or plastic ones. We even have tumble bins. Pop in and have a look! GREEN FINGER TIP: Spray your lawn with a broadleaf weed killer and give it a good feed. A drizzly day is ideal to do this job. VEGTABLES: "A good gardener always plants 3 seeds - one for the bugs, one for the weather and one for himself." - Leo Aikman There is a whole range of vegetables to suit any size ga rden. You can now sow. These vegetable are great for small gardens as they are compact growing and don't take up a lot of space. GREEN FINGER TIP: If your ga rden is soggy add plenty of compost and peat to improve drainage. Otherwise why not try a raised garden bed. No more soggy soil, easy to weed and easy to set up. You don't need heaps of room either. A metre x metre is easy to manage. If your garden is soggy add plenty of compost and peat to improve drainage. Pop in and see our friendly Gardening team for more information and advice. Potatoes: You say "Potatoe" I say "Patattah" The family say YUM!!!! Potatoes are great with so many meals and there is such a variety of seed potatoes to chose from now. Roasting: Rua, Agria & Moonlight Boiling: Purple Passion, Nadine, Jersey Benne, Cliffs Kidney Mashing: IIam Hardy, Agria, Moonlight Growing in Buckets: Purple Passion, Rocket, Cliffs Kidney Christmas Day Goodies: Maris Anchor, Swift, Cliff Kidney & Jersey Benne You should now be planting your seed potatoes. They need to be sprouted before you plant them in the garden. Lay them in a sunny place for 7 - 10 days until the eyes sprout. Plant your seed potatoes about 10cm under the surface of the soil, with the shoots facing upwards. Once the shoots start appearing through the ground, mound up soil to cover them up again, this makes them more resistant to frost and encourage a larger crop.
