Unbeaten winners of the cup for the past three years, Upper Hutt has set the standards in the popu- lar competition. Played at the end of the college rugby union season, the cup will feature 16 teams across the region with Upper Hutt, St Pat's Silver- stream and Hutt International Boys School carrying the local hopes. Heretaunga, which played for a first time last year, has not entered in 2011. The strong Aotea College will play in the four-team upper valley pool in a significant change while Otaki College enters the overall competition for a first time. Upper Hutt, captained by Declan Fisher, will feature a mix of new face and experience. The side's defence of the title follows an outstanding 2010, ending in an emphatic 30-16 win over Rongotai at Porirua park in October. The crack college combination will then defend the Ross Whaanga Kumite. Upper Hutt has held and defended this memorial trophy on its home track for a long time, but this season the rules have changed and it will be up for grabs in both home and away games. St Pat's Silverstream will be at home today at 4pm, playing Aotea. In a late change, Upper Hutt is now expected to play HIBS tomorrow at UHC at 4pm, a game originally scheduled to be played at HIBS today. In other college league develop- ments, a year 9 and 10 compe- tition is being held for the first time over six weeks from Saturday. Upper Hutt, HIBS and Silver- stream are joined by Taita in their pool with games being played at 11.30am. HIBS will be home to Silverstream and Upper Hutt to Taita in the opening round. Activation's duathlons get underway Rising up: Cyclist Georgia Wedd, in the senior medium category, takes a small road rise in Saturday's duathlon, the first of the Activation series. Photo: PETER MCDONALD The first of three duathlons, organised by the city's Activation recreation group, was held at Trentham Memorial Park on Sunday. The morning event, held in promising and then variable weather, attracted about 100 com- petitors and about the same figure as the opening duathlons of earlier years have involved. That's pretty consistent and we have found the numbers build up further for the second and third event,'' Activation's Mike Mercer says. There were encouraging numbers in the opening year 1 to 4 and year 5 to 8 opening junior events and handy competition across the adult running and racing, organised with the options of short, medium or long courses, all of which include use of the Bartons Bush tracks. The second duathlon will take place, at the same venue, in four weeks on September 25 with the third and final event on October 9. The results from Sunday are posted on the Activation site along with all the detail on entering and training for the second and third events. See activation.org.nz.
