From left are resident Yoke Sau Cheng, Mitre 10 Mega employee Amy Blake and mayor Wayne Guppy. More than 75,000 sunflower seeds were given to Upper Hutt residents last week to celebrate the new spring season. Mitre 10 Mega cheered commuters at Upper Hutt rail- way station with free packets of seeds at 6am on Thursday. Maggie Mouat, who helped organise the event, says the gifts were part of Mitre 10's We Love Upper Hutt'' promotion. We chose to launch the cam- paign on the first day of spring because it feels like the time when everyone's spirits are up.'' Commuter Yoke Sau Cheng says she was thrilled with the idea: I've never grown them before, but I certainly will now.'' Paul Berney, Mitre 10 Mega Upper Hutt store manager, says they wanted to do something for the community. Over the years we may have gone from being a relatively small business to a really big one, but we haven't forgotten that it's the people of Upper Hutt who make our business work. We'd like to think the 75,000 seeds we've given away will make a pretty unique and cheerful sight by around mid- January.'' Mayor Wayne Guppy also helped unveil a billboard on Fergusson Dr that was covered in hundreds of seed packets. They are free and will be replenished during the week. Mitre 10 Mega employee Darren Milburn says they will be involved in other projects the community has difficulty funding. We look forward to making as many people smile in the coming months as we possibly can.''
