Two engines responded to the alarm, which was raised when smoke was smelt. The culprit was a faulty fridge. Mr Hipkins says they are grateful the fault occurred during office hours. An effective way to make new contacts By SUE TRUEMAN, Upper Hutt business advocacy manager, Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce COMMERCE COMMENT Ahh! spring at last. Time to shake off those winter blues, get out and about, and promote your business. Networking is a valuable and cost effective way of meeting potential new customers and staying in direct contact with your existing customers. People like to buy from people they know -- it s human nature, so the more you can get known in a market place the more likely you are to increase your share of that market. At the chamber we offer lots of opportunities to meet other business people in a relaxed and informal environment. We have some terrific events based in Upper Hutt coming up over the next few weeks as well as a series of events in Lower Hutt. Some of our local entre- preneurs are showcasing their businesses. This month on Sept- ember 13 we have a business after five at Dzine Signs -- an award-winning business, which is nothing if not innovative. They are going to show us the magic behind how they make all kinds of signage. Next month (on October 11) Acma Industries, one of Upper Hutt s key exporters, will host a business after five and show people around its impressive manufacturing operation. A rare treat to see how a diverse range of products are made from poly- urethane. On November 2 it is the turn of TogZone Swimming School and on December 6 My Day Spa. These BA5s hosted at the business premises give you an opportunity to have a behind the scenes look at how these suc- cessful businesses operate and just what they can do. Yes, you get to be nosy in a really nice way. The chamber is hosting a breakfast with Paula Bennett, Minister of Social Development, Employment and Youth Affairs, at Silverstream Retreat tom- orrow, September 8. Also coming up we have business after fives with Gillespie Young Watson, Swish Dish, Deloittes and Radio Network. Sometimes people who have not attended networking events before feel a bit shy about coming along but let me assure you they are heaps of fun and you get to meet a bunch of great people. Chamber events are relaxed and friendly. They are an oppor- tunity to meet and socialise with other business people. Yes, you usually do discuss your busi- ness, but in my 17 years in the chamber I haven t been to one yet that has been about work- ing the room . If you are interested in atten- ding one of these events call me on 527 9812 and I will take you along to a business after five and introduce you to other local businesses. Come along and give it a try.
