Wedding Open Day Saturday 17 September, 12.00pm --4.00pm Centre celebrates Upper Hutt mayor Wayne Guppy cut Heretaunga Park Early Learning Centre s fifth birthday cake on Friday. The centre began as the result of a local family s search for quality childcare in their area. They started their own centre which was officially opened by Mr Guppy, who has often popped in for a quick story and chat with the children since the centre opened. Since then the building has been extended to provide a larger learning environment for the children and now has an all- weather covered deck. To celebrate its fifth birthday the centre organised a series of activities to entertain the chil- dren, parents and staff. This included a private screening of Cars2 at the Ascot Cinema, a session at the Rimutaka gym and a fun games evening. The team also volunteered at the Riding for Disabled in Sil- verstream doing odd jobs to help others in their community. Coffee event helps young Susan Bowden, service manager of the Hutt Valley Care Co-ordination Centre, was guest speaker at the recent Save the Children Fund coffee morning in Upper Hutt. Through its contract to the district health board, this agency provides assessors to co- ordinate age support to those in need. Clients are usually in the 65 and over age group and are helped to live independently in the com- munity or to be assessed for residential care. Referral from anyone other than a health professional necessitates background infor- mation from medical or other relevant sources. Eligibility for support includes the level of DHB funding entitlement and the type of support required such as personal care, respite period, carer support subsidy, access to residential facility, and in some cases referral to Work and Income. Urgency grading is necessary but emergency care is always available. The morning raised $449 for SCF. The next coffee morning is on Tuesday, September 13. It will be a show and tell with members bringing something of significant importance in their lives. Garden produce will be sold to coincide with the annual appeal.
