Cory Jane, Upper Hutt rugby's first World Cup player, begins his biggest sport- ing assignment this weekend, knowing he has the all-encompassing support of his home town behind him. The city's favourite son (and one of its keenest and most influential ambassadors), Jane has been an All Black since 2008. With 25 international caps already in the bag he deserves to take his game to the biggest of world stages. The Riverstones Terraces husband and father of three has put a troubled and injury-plagued season behind him to emerge as one of the potential key players in the All Blacks' push to take the mantle of world rugby supremacy for the first time in 24 years. His international career was reportedly on the line until he turned in a two try, man-of-the-match performance against South Africa in the Tri-Nations. Now, for v arious reasons, he seems to be the country's first choice winger again. Jane re-signed for the Hurricanes before joining the All Blacks World Cup camp, another loyal decision. A Heretaunga college old boy, Jane has played premier club rugby for Upper Hutt since his second year out of college but he had to wait several seasons to get the oppor- tunity to make his mark at the highest level. One of his first games for Wellington was as a replacement winger against the British Lions in 2005, six seasons ago. Though gifted with intuitive and natural talent, Jane also has a great work ethic and team values, and takes his opportunities. He is, in the best sense, a rugby everyman. We wish Cory the absolute best and we have all the confidence in the world he will do an outstanding job,'' Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy says. Cory is a freakishly good player, a game breaker . . . Upper Hutt is very well repres- ented here,'' Mr Guppy says. COLIN WILLIAMS Hockey growth now paying dividends Heretaunga College is celebrating a most successful hockey season, and hopefully there is more to come. All three boys' teams played their way to the semifinals of the Wellington Secondary Schools' competition on the weekend and the first XI are one game away from pro- motion to the premier one grade next season. The college's third XI were the weekend's casualty, farewelling their strong season with a loss in their semi-final against Wel- lington College. The seconds beat Tawa College and tonight will play Naenae firsts in the res- erve grade final this evening. Heretaunga's top team have the biggest of games ahead of them on Friday (5pm) at the National Hockey Stadium after a stun- ning semifinal victory. The side, coached by Hayden Shaw, beat the top St Pat's Silverstream side 3-1 and now face Paraparaumu College in the final. The winner of this game will get promoted to the premier one next year, where Heretaunga College has not been for a very long time,'' Shaw says. Victory here, and promotion, will sit well with the team, which is already organised for a pre-season tour to Australia ahead of next season. The growth of the sport -- with our numbers rising from 14 to 42 boys over the last few years -- has helped make hockey one of the top sports at the school both in terms of results and playing numbers,'' Shaw says. Proof of this has come with the college's strong representation in Wellington age- grade teams, with ten Heretaunga boys winning selection for the under-15 and under-19 reps. Pop up posts Framed: Parkland opposite the railway station sprouted unique rugby goal posts on Thursday, a special Rugby World Cup entrance to the city for the all-important weeks ahead. With the crossbar announcing ''Upper Hutt welcomes RWC supporters'' and its upright pads in the colour of the city premier rugby clubs, Upper Hutt's maroon and gold and Rimutaka's amber and black, the posts cover the pathway to the Fergusson Drive pedestrian crossing.
