Upper Hutt Leader : September 14th 2011
52 UPPER HUTT LEADER, SEPTEMBER 14, 2011 NEWS 4037870AA Rebuilt house in national finals Perfect copy: Lindsay Residential won a gold award for this recreation of a Te Marua home, destroyed by fire two years ago, with an interior that includes matai flooring over particleboard, timber windows, leadlight glazing and panel doors. Lovingly crafting a new, but ident- ical, home from photographs of one destroyed by fire has won Geoff Lindsay, of Lindsay Resi- dential, a place in the national Registered Master Builders House of the Year. Lindsay Residential won the only gold awarded to an Upper Hutt-based building company in the 2011 competition. The house is one of two Welling- ton finalists in the new homes $600,000 to $1 million category. Winners will be announced in late November in Auckland. Lindsay Residential rebuilt the Upper Hutt home that 15 years before had been saved from demo- lition by its owners Chris and Cherelyne in Napier and transported to Te Marua. A builder himself, Chris restored the house to its original glory and they loved it. But it was severely damaged by fire two years ago. Chris, now retired, had seen other award- winning work Lindsay Residential had done, and asked the company to tender for the job to recreate his home. Mr Lindsay and his team won the tender and they enjoyed every moment of bringing the new home to life. The brief was to build it exactly as it was, within the requirements of today s building code, Mr Lindsay says. So what they have ended up with is a lovely brand new version of what they had which has way more insulation and is warmer and drier than the old home would have been, he says. The owners have been through very sad times but are absolutely delighted with their new home. Lindsay Residential has been a Registered Master Builder since 1992. The company has entered properties into House of the Year eight times and won eight awards -- five golds and three silvers across all new homes and renovations categories. Throughout his 30 years build- ing Mr Lindsay has always been based in Upper Hutt. He says it is the first time he has had a chance to do a job like this. It was amazing, challenging and very rewarding, he says. He says people can feel confi- dent in a job well done by a regis- tered master builder, especially one confident enough to put their workmanship up for judging by their peers.
