By JIMMY NESS St Joseph's School has a beautiful new mural to celebrate 100 years in Upper Hutt. The school commissioned three pieces from local artist Teresa Secker earlier in the year, to celebrate their anniversary last June. One panel is painted in black and white to represent the past, while the other two are in colour to refer to the present and future. Mrs Secker officially unveiled the mural in front of an excited school last Friday. She says each tile has a symbol for the Catholic faith, education and all the nationalities at the school. I thought, how do I portray curiosity, inclusiveness and enquiry-based learning? And I just thought of my own journey as an artist as well as a child at school.'' Students Eden Morehau, 5, and Albert Latailakepa, 12, were also included as models in the mural. There are two children who are holding hands and standing on the tiles,'' Mrs Secker says. The little girl is looking back to the past and the year 8 boy is looking forward to the future. These two children represent curi- osity and the journey along the pathway of education.'' Mrs Secker has created murals for Upper Hutt and St Brendan's primary schools, as well as pieces in Australia and England. She owns a gallery in Riverstone Terraces and specialises in contemporary art. St Joseph's principal Peter Ahern says he is really pleased with their new paintings. It's a major wall in Upper Hutt. It's really a symbol and acknowledgement of where we have been and our journey really.''
