Photo: ROSEMARY McLENNAN By ROSEMARY McLENNAN Rimutaka Maori wardens now have wheels they can consider their own. Last week they took delivery of a Toyota Estima people carrier on longterm loan from Upper Hutt car firm Angus & Burrell. The firm has made vehicles available to a number of law enforcement-related groups in Upper Hutt over the years, includ- ing community police and truancy. Rimutaka Maori wardens had been in recess until a couple of years ago. The re-establishment of the vol- unteer group, under the banner of the Rimutaka Maori committee, part of the Wellington district Maori council, saw them sharing a vehicle with Porirua Maori wardens. But the distance between the two cities meant too much time was spent getting the vehicle to where it was needed. Senior Constable John Cowden from Upper Hutt police approached Angus & Burrell for help. Ingerson Insurance Brokers sponsored the insurance cover, Pak n Save covers the petrol and Dzine Signs will be sign-writing the vehicle. The vehicle was blessed by Ratana Church apostle and Orongomai kaumatua Sonny Webster at a brief ceremony on Thursday. Mr Cowden says their own vehicle means local wardens will no longer be confined to walking the central business area but will expand to other parts of the city, mostly at night. Looking for rangitahi (youth) who should be at home is one of their tasks. In central Upper Hutt and Sil- verstream they pound the pavements to remind people of the liquor ban. They also have the right to enter place where liquor is served and point out to management any people who are drunk. During Rugby World Cup matches they have commitments in Wellington for the October 2 game festivities and October 8 and 9 quarter finals. Mr Cowden says the wardens command a lot of respect. And some people have an atti- tude towards police but respond better towards Maori wardens, Mr Cowden says. They also do duty at public events including the Spring Festi- val and Wellington Cup Day. Mr Cowden says they are hoping to recruit more wardens. Anyone interested can call him on 027 438 3554 or Mr Waihi on 528 3775.
