Photo: TANIA NIWA PHOTOGRAPHY As part of a series of exhibitions at Expressions, Mount Marua Gallery is hosting a major one-man exhi- bition, Darcy Nicholas -- Land of My Ancestors. The exhibition of paintings, draw- ings, sculpture and jewellery depicts the physical and spiritual elements of Maori existence in a contemporary world. With tribal affiliations to Te Kahui Maunga and the tribes of Taranaki and Tauranga Moana areas, Nicho- las' artworks depict powerful ima- gery; luminous faces tell the stories of his people's relationship to the land and their spiritual ancestral world. This Sunday at 2pm, Nicholas will give an artist talk discussing the artworks in the exhibition. This is a fantastic opportunity for the public to attend a talk delivered by one of Maoridom's leading con- temporary artists. Nicholas has exhibited throughout New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Britain, Africa and Europe, and his work is held in private and public collections around the world and highlighted in several national and international publications. Nicholas was awarded a Fulbright scholarship in 1984 to observe the development of Native and African American art. In 2005 he was creative director for Maori Art Meets America, which was a major tourism event in the city of San Francisco. Later that year he won the Cre- ative Wellington Award. Nicholas has written, lectured and spoken on contemporary Maori art, Maori development, and creative industries and cities in Australia, United States and Canada. In July 2008 he was awarded a certificate of appreciation from the United States ambassador William McCormick for the visionary projects that have brought greater understanding between the people of the United States of America and New Zealand''. Darcy Nicholas -- Land Of My Ancestors is open until Sunday, October 16, 2011 in the Mount Marua Gallery at Expressions Arts and Entertainment Centre, 836 Fergusson Dr, Upper Hutt. The exhibition can be viewed from Tuesday to Sunday between 10am and 4pm.
