This places a high achieving young athlete into primary and intermediate school settings to provide motivational talks to students. The focus is to inspire high levels of sports and recreation involvement in our students, foster a love of physical activity and for those that are already engaged, the encouragement to excel to high levels of performance. The programme works on two levels; engaging our students and providing them with a relatable role model to aspire towards, but also giving a local elite Upper Hutt athlete the opportunity to promote themselves, engage with their community and provide them with the chance to deliver presentations and speak in front of large audiences. In 2011 the Activation role model is Gareth Kean. Gareth is a lifetime local who attended both Mangaroa Primary and Maidstone Intermediate. Gareth won Silver in the 2010 Commonwealth Games making him the youngest Kiwi medalist. He is the country's highest ranked back-stroker and also ranked 8th in world. He won gold at the Pan Pacifc's in 2009, double gold at the 2010 Junior Pacifc's and three bronze medals at the Mare Nostrum European Swim meet. Gareth has also recently won the Westpac Emerging Talent Award at the Halberg Trust Awards 2011. His sights are now frmly set on the London Olympics in 2012. So far Gareth has visited fve schools and seen a total of 1600 students with several more bookings already made for this month. Goals are such an important part of getting our young people involved in sports and recreation and through the Role Model programme our students are exposed to and supported to develop their own goals for participation. To have a role model of Gareth's caliber in the Upper Hutt community available to present to schools in this manner is a testament to the high achieving sporting culture we have in our city. Life Education Trust Family Bike Challenge 2011 Sunday 2 October, Trentham Memorial Park, starts at 10am, cost $5 For parents, caregivers, pre-schoolers, primary and intermediate aged students. Each registered rider will receive some goodies which will include their 'Life Education License'. This will be used as a record of the 'riding mileage' that is covered during the event. The course circuit is set within the boundaries of Trentham Memorial Park and riders will be riding on a mixture of fat paved and grass surfaces. Every time a rider passes through 'Harold's Pit Stop', riders will earn a stamp on their license. The aim is to collect as many stamps as possible in the riding timeframe. The course will be adapted to suit the abilities of younger participants. Prizes will be awarded at the completion of the event whilst spot prizes will be handed out by Harold throughout the day. Harold is organising a 'decorate your bike' competition, and a bike obstacle course challenge as well! Late registrations will be taken on the day starting at 9.20am. To register email firstname.lastname@example.org or for more information please contact our organisers: Rebekah Quirke, 027 672 3373 or Jo Manks, 021 503 852 Stay in Sport! www.upperhuttcity.com/stayinsport Leaving school and want to keep playing sport?
