Put partner first for happy marriage By ROSEMARY McLENNAN Diamond couple: John and Kathleen Chapman.Photo: ROSEMARY McLENNAN Heretaunga couple John and Kathleen Chapman celebrated 60 years of marriage at the weekend. They grew up in the same vil- lage, Bushey Heath in Hertfordshire, a rural area about 10 miles from the centre of London. Both attended St Peter's Church of England and met through the youth group and choir. In 1948 he asked her out for a walk and later they started dating. The Scout leader, who was into cycle racing, was called up to do two years of national military ser- vice. He went to France with the military police and was on the staff of Field Marshal Montgom- ery when the military police con- trolled post-war Europe. He was based in Fontainebleau and was among the people that one of the officers, Colonel John Hunt, took rock climbing at weekends. Colonel Hunt later led the 1953 British expedition that included Sir Edmund Hillary and con- quered Mt Everest. Mrs Chapman worked as a shorthand typist in the insurance industry off Oxford St in London. They became engaged on her 21st birthday when he came home on leave in early 1951. Six months later he left the army and they married at St Peter's Church on September 23, 1951. They set up home in a flat in her grandparents' home in Harrow. Mr Chapman joined the police and was posted nearby. In 1958 and with two young children, the Chapmans decided to move to New Zealand. We had no idea what we were in for,'' Mrs Chapman says. After a seven-week boat trip that took a week longer than expected because the ship broke down on the way, they settled with friends who lived in an old farm house at Egmont Village. Mr Chapman joined the police in New Plymouth and the couple moved closer to his work. This was the era of DIY living. Mrs Chapman sewed and baked for her family. Mr Chapman left the police to become a salesman for Unilever and later joined the prison service in New Plymouth. The family enjoyed hiking and Mr Chapman and the children twice climbed Mt Egmont. Mr Chapman was also a keen sailor. After several promotions they moved to Upper Hutt and initially lived in the prison village in Pine- hill Cres. Rimutaka Prison, then called Wi Tako, was minimum security and had fewer than 200 inmates. Mr Chapman worked at the prison until he retired as a div- isional officer in the Corrections Department. During their years in Upper Hutt the Chapmans had two more children. Mrs Chapman did dressmaking at home and joined Upper Hutt Spinners and Weavers. The couple joined the New Vogue Sequence Dancing Club, belong to St Mary's Anglican Church, Upper Hutt Cossie Club and Upper Hutt Probus. Asked their advice for a happy marriage, Mrs Chapman says working together on the relation- ship'' and being honest. Mr Chapman says care about each other, put your partnership first''. He says it is good they have compatible backgrounds. The Chapmans have four chil- dren, Elizabeth Batten (Takaka), Alan (New Plymouth), Jane Jack- son (Australia) and Matthew (Carterton). They also have 13 grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.
