Saturday, Sunday & Public Holidays: 8.00am - 6.00pm VEGETABLES SOW: Beans, peas, carrots, radish, sweetcorn, beetroot, silver beet, spinach, parsnip, caulifower, cucumber, peppers, pumpkin, tomatoes, parsley, turnips, broccoli, cabbage, leeks, courgettes, squashes and sow a few lettuce seeds every couple of weeks. Control slugs and snails with slug bait. Spray potatoes and vegetable plants with Champion copper to prevent fungus diseases. GREEN FINGER TIP: Grow basil with tomato plants. It encourages better quality taste and discourages garden pests e.g. white butterfy. GREEN FINGER TIP: Always uses seed raising mix. Ordinary potting mix is too coarse. GREEN FINGER TIP: Water your garden in the morning. The sun activates the water, generating the food that the plant will draw on throughout the day. GREEN FINGER TIP: Mulch should be about 7 cm thick to be really effective in conserving moisture. Any spring month is a busy time for our green fngered gardeners, making October is no exception. We are conscious your garden is calling you, in this month of rapid growth. Please fnd some quick fre tasks to keep you on track in the month of October. FLOWERS & FRUIT TREES: Plant passionfruit, rhubarb, tamarillo, lychees, mangos and custard apples. Feed all citrus trees with Citrus Fertiliser Prune tired old citrus. Bear in mind if you cut back masses, it is highly likely not to fruit for a couple seasons. Spray fruit trees and grape vines with Champion Copper to prevent fungus diseases. Shrubs that go in now will make maximum growth over the next few months. Sow seeds of fowering annuals directly into the ground; alyssum, Californian poppy, statice, marigolds, cosmos, nasturtium, petunia and sunfowers. Mulch all plants to conserve moisture and check that your watering systems are operational. GREEN FINGER TIP: Bees are essential for pollinating fruit and vegetable crops. Planting herbs such as parsley, lavender, thyme, dill sage will attract bees to your garden. GREEN FINGER TIP: If your garden is soggy add plenty of compost and peat to improve drainage. Otherwise why not try a raised garden bed.
