Upper Hutt College defenders, from left, are Aiken Nisbet, Bat Kapua, Nathan Cash-Wharehinga and Daniel Poa with an unidentified fifth going around the legs. Upper Hutt College's three-year reign of school rugby league supremacy is over. Wellington champions for three years, and the holders of the Stephen Kearney Cup, Upper Hutt were shunted out of this year's finals contention when they were defeated by Taita 20-26 on Wednesday in an away quarter- final. Going into the elimination game, played at Taita, Upper Hutt's mantle was already under threat. With only a handful of players back from the previous all- conquering season, Upper Hutt had already lost its undefeated tag, going down to neighbouring St Pat's Silverstream in pool play. Playing away to Taita (after finishing second in their pool), Upper Hutt looked to be doing the business when they were leading 20-8 with 15 minutes left to play. Then it all went belly-up as Taita came alive and, probing Upper Hutt's defensive uncer- tainty, rattled on six unanswered tries and a resounding 28 points. Coach Jackie Awa was disap- pointed but not disheartened with the loss, which leaves the side playing off for an overall fifth placing in the 16-team compe- tition. For the last 10 minutes our defence let us down. All teams also need a bit of luck to go their way and we had some wrong calls at the wrong times,'' he said. But if you are a good team you needtobeabletoholdon[toa lead].'' This was always a rebuilding year, he said. We were one of the smaller teams and after our successful run we were always regrouping, with only four or five players back.'' The school's juniors playing for the Johnny Lomax Cup are especially promising, Mr Awa says. It's not too bad to be finishing in the top eight and a lot of good juniors are coming up. We have a good core of players to be competitive in a couple of years.'' In another quarterfinal last week, Silverstream relinquished the Ross Whaanga Kumete as they were edged out 10-16 by St Bernard's, who grabbed the last try decider in a top-class match. They too now play off for positions five to eight, at home against St Pat's Town at 4pm today. Upper Hutt are against Rongotai tomorrow at the Wakefield Park astro, 6.30pm. The Stephen Kearney Cup semifinals see Taita at home to Porirua today and St Bernard's at home to Bishop Viard tomorrow.
