Particularly that it is an independent school which receives little government funding and maintains its fees at the very reasonable level of $8000pa. Compare this to nearby Hutt International Boys School. This is a state integrated school so receives government funding of almost $2 million a year, yet its fees are just under $7000pa. HIBS special character, which entitles it to generous government funding, is a sham. As well, the level of its fees in comparison to an independent school raises serious financial accountability questions. It s time the Ministry of Education put the spotlight on this school. MAX SHIERLAW, Lower Hutt Basic hygiene starts early on I was horrified to read in last week s Hutt News and Upper Hutt Leader about the number of unnecessary admissions to Hutt Hospital because of poor hygiene practices. What was most worrying was the fact that some schools have removed soap from bathrooms because of the mess being made! Surely the schools, ie the Ministry of Education, must know basic hygiene starts early on soastolasta lifetime? Why can t the schools have liquid soap dispensers and bring back cloakroom monitors or prefects on a roster system, to oversee the bathrooms during breaks? As Ms Lucie-Smith says, there needs to be more of an effort with decile seven and eight because those parents money will only stretch so far. It is upsetting to think future generations health may suffer long-term when there are simple solutions. The Education Ministry and Department of Health need to confer on this! ANN NICHOLS, Stokes Valley Thanks We would like to thank all the local businesses who gave assistance in providing prizes for our recent fundraising quiz night and in particular to the Upper Hutt Cossie Club for providing such a great venue and awesome help in organising the evening. A huge thanks also to all the parents, family and friends who attended on the night and made it such a great event. Your support has been extremely helpful in enabling our team of 12 young women to travel to Auckland on October 30 to compete in the Pom/Dance division at the New Zealand Cheer and Dance Internationals.
