By COLIN WILLIAMS A more than half million dollar pain- ting is on sale at the Expressions Arts and Entertainment Centre. The Call of Tara- naki, an acrylic painting by the con- temporary Maori ar- tist Darcy Nicholas, is sitting in pride of place at the venue s Mount Marua Gal- lery with a hefty $550,000 price tag. Mayor Wayne Guppy noted the artwork s price tag when speaking to his council at a recent meeting, while Expressions director Stephanie Cottrill says she is not sure if its selling price is a record high for the venue. A massive work, both in scope and size (measuring 168 centi- metres by 127cm), The Call of Tara- naki is Darcy s icon painting . It expresses everything I believe in . . . the physical and spiritual bond I have with the land, my ancestral mountain Taranaki, and my ancestors, Nicholas, a former Fulbright scholar, says. His one-man exhibition Land of My Ancestors, which represents the physical and spiritual elements of Maori existence in a contemporary world, has been very well-received, Ms Cottrill says. Sixty people attended his recent floor talk at Expressions, she says. Ms Cottrill cannot say if the $550,000 sale price is an individual high for the venue. For operational purposes we work on a total exhi- bition value, and often highly- valued individual works we exhibit are not for sale, so the individual works don t tend to stand out, she says. When works are for sale, the pricing is supplied by the exhibiting artists -- who are the owners. The price is determined by two factors, what the artist is prepared toletitgoforandhowmucha buyer is prepared to pay for it, she says. A leading contemporary New Zealand artist, Nicholas has sold thousands of art works all over the world and written and lectured on contemporary Maori art and devel- opment. The Darcy Nicholas exhibition is open until Sunday, October 16, at the Mount Marua Gallery at Expressions. Viewing hours are Tuesday to Sunday 10am till 4pm. pix.ccn.co.nz er your own copy of photos in this paper, or other CCN titles, check out: To orde
