Both the Wellington International Stars and UK Kiwi combinations had runaway wins on Saturday, dismissing Oromo 6-1 and the Europe XI combination 6-0, to go through to the annual event's final. In the Plate competition, South Sudan and Vatican City won their semifinals over Somalia and Street Soccer. The event's finals day, which again is at Harcourt Park, will be Saturday week, on October 15, with the week off to allow for the Upper Hutt City football club to host its regular under- 19 tournament. The football tournament's big semifinal margins followed the pattern of scoring this year. Oromo had won their quarterfinal 10-1 a week earlier but they simply were no match for the Wellington International Stars. UK Kiwi, stacked with local players, were equally emphatic and tournament organiser Tayo Agunlejika says he has no doubts the best two teams have qualified to the big last game. On Saturday week the plate final will begin at noon, with the main game kicking off at 2pm. Have a go at lawn bowls The summer bowls season is gearing up and people who have not tried the sport are invited to attend Silverstream Bowling and Petanque Club's ''Have A Go'' day on Sunday, from 10.30am till 3pm. There is no need to book and all you need is a pair of flat-soled shoes. The club provides the playing gear and coaching for what is a great warm-up for the upcoming season of the popular ''Mates In Bowls'', the nationwide social summer league season which runs on Wednesday evenings from 16 November for three weeks and again from 25 January for six weeks. To find out more, contact Robyn Tuckett on 528 7635. The Silverstream Bowling and Petanque Club is at 37 Dunns St. Karting in the planning KartSport Wellington and KartSport New Zealand have confirmed Mi Sedaap Instant Noodles as the premier sponsor for the 2012 CIK Trophy of New Zealand event, to be contested at CRC Raceway, Kaitoke, Upper Hutt on January 27 to 29, 2012. This event is the premier international kart event of the year and doubles as the first round of the ProKart series for 2012. KartSport Wellington president Gary Wilson says they are delighted to welcome Mi Sedaap as their premier sponsor. ''This is the third consecutive year we will be hosting this event, and we know this will be a bigger and better event than previous years.'' The 2012 Mi Sedaap CIK Trophy of New Zealand will be televised and a one-hour programme will screen on TV1. Two one-hour programmes will screen later on SKY Sport. The KZ2 (senior 125cc, six-speed gearbox), KF2 (senior 125cc) and KF3 (junior 125cc) classes will contest their respective CIK Trophy of New Zealand. KZ2, KF2 and KF3 Masters results will count as the first round of 2012 ProKart Series -- a five-round series contested throughout the North Island. Four support classes will also compete for the KartSport New Zealand Challenge Cups. Boys off to Argentina Hasta luego: These Hutt Valley footballers are looking forward to games against their peers in Argentina this month. Photo: JIM CHIPP A team of local boys will have a chance to pit their football skills against their peers in Argentina. Capital Football youth coach Martin Pereyra Garcia, of Argentina, will take a team of Hutt Valley boys to his homeland to play in an under- 14 tournament. We are going to play a tournament in my home city of Santiago, he said. Most of the boys are from Upper Hutt Football and will spend five days training with a profes- sional coach in the mornings, followed by football games each afternoon, leading up to the Julio Medina tournament. After the tournament they will spend five days in Buenos Aires, where they will meet Francisco Cerro, a midfielder with Clausera champion side Velez Sarsfield, and they will watch his afternoon training session. Pereyra Garcia hopes the boys will be able to see the Argentina-Chile World Cup qualifier while they are in Buenos Aires. He is uncertain how the boys will fare in Argentina. It s quite hard because our [Argentina s] game is more moving the ball and skills, whereas here it is more hard work and teamwork. I m trying to focus on getting them very fit and very strong to take chances we get. The boys visit has been reported in the Santiago press. Rippa World Cup at last Rippa! It s the World Cup tomorrow. Bad weather caused a blip in Upper Hutt s rugby world cup celebrations with the postponement of the Inter-Primary School Rippa Rugby Tournament, set to have been played yesterday. All going well, the event will now be held tomorrow at Trentham Mem- orial Park. The long-planned event will feature 40 primary school teams in separate year 3 and 4 and year 5 and 6 competitions. Twenty schools are involved, with each adopting a Rugby World Cup country and set to play in their individual colours and under their name.
