Speedway's top award Supreme winner: Mayor Wayne Guppy, left, with Martin Halcrow from the Wellington Speedway Society. Wellington Speedway at Te Marua is the overall winner of the Wellington Airport Community Awards in Upper Hutt. The speedway society won the sport and leisure category before taking out the supreme honour at the awards event on October 6. The health and wellbeing category was won by Side By Side Mentors, with highly commended going to Victim Support Upper Hutt. The Clyma Park community garden won the heritage and wellbeing category. The education and child/youth development section was won by the Upper Hutt Parents' Centre. The arts and culture section was won by the Upper Hutt Highlanders for their Upper Hutt Highland Gathering at Harcourt Park with a commendation to the Upper Hutt Country Music Club. The Wellington Speedway Society began in 1972 and provides an opportunity for locals to race motorsport in a safe and organised environment. Race meetings are held every week -- weather permitting -- from October till April. The speedway has no paid staff and is run by volunteers. Side by Side Mentors support parents with young children. It is an initiative of the Everyday Fam- ilies Group -- people from three church denominations with a passion to support families in a unified way. Victim Support Upper Hutt works alongside the police to help victims of crime and trauma. The Clyma Park garden was formed following a council pro- posal, since abandoned, to sell the park. Volunteers have built raised gardens to grow vegetables, created a community space where neighbours enjoy visiting and meeting, and become involved in adjacent Fraser Crescent School and its Green Kids Programme. For more than 50 years Upper Hutt Parents' Centre has been helping local parents prepare for childbirth and supporting raising infants and toddlers. They run parent education classes and activities such as the Early Years Expo. The Highland Gathering began this year to showcase Scottish dance, music and culture. The country music club cel- ebrated its 35th anniversary this year. The club promotes enjoy- ment of country music with reg- ular club nights and outside performances. Wellington International Air- port Ltd, in partnership with the Community Trust of Wellington, and the five local authorities in the area join together to recognise the voluntary work carried out in the Wellington region. The focus of the awards is to ensure the community is aware of the voluntary work undertaken, projects that benefit our com- munity, and to recognise and reward the contributions by vol- unteers and their organisations. Category winners from each area are eligible for the 2011 Wel- lington Airport Regional Awards which will be held at Wellington Airport on November 10.
