Dashing along State Highway 58 between Pauatahanui and Judgeford it is easy to miss Old Man Mac at the Old Cobham Mill -- because it's tucked in at the side of the road. The premises -- sawmill, machine shop, timber and landscaping yard -- are hidden behind trees, hedges and fences. But security is important because some ''macrocarpa miracles'' are taking place. Macrocarpa is now in demand for high-quality outdoor furniture and interior use, as well as the more traditional landscaping, fencing and garden structures. It has good longevity and is an eco-friendly wood with none of the nasties associated with treated timber. Pauatahanui and Judgeford had several mills during the 1900s, but Old Man Mac may be the last of the originals. For many years the business was known as Bright's Mill, and Cobham Mill, then Kiwi Mill, until local company Old Man Mac took it over four years ago. Tony Bevan fronts the company and leads his team of four permanent staff. ''We are a local identity, owned by locals, employing locals and supplying the local community. We are truly independent and are free to source our timber from Ruakaka -- near Whangarei -- to Bluff. ''We source quality timber at competitive rates and pass those savings on to the customer.'' Tony understands the properties of timber, and can advise clients about the best timber for their project. ''We rarely sell the goods without the know-how -- because we want our clients to be satisfied and pleased with the results. ''As a mill, we also have the advantage of actually being able to cut the timber here on site, so we supply the timber exactly the way the client requires it. And with our machine shop we can also profile accordingly.'' Macrocarpa is Old Man Mac's speciality. And while much of their work is in milling and supplying macrocarpa timber to order, they also supply -- and mill -- pine and other exotic species. They are well-located for clients from Wellington, Kapiti/Mana and the Hutt Valley, who are looking for landscaping timber, farm fencing supplies, tanalised timber posts and poles, and garden accessories -- sleepers, edging, raised garden boxes and outdoor furniture. Wastage at the site is minimal. By- products are collected, bagged and sold: shavings for chicken boxes, stables and animal hutches; untreated sawdust for food smoking and garden use; timber offcuts are sold as firewood. Smaller offcuts are mulched for use by landscapers and gardeners. Other garden/landscaping supplies include garden mix, topsoil, builder's mix and a range of river stones from small and large boulders to feature ''taipo'' rocks.
