Rob Caldwell, centre, holds up an iPhone featuring the fictitious Friend Me app in the Hutt International Boys' School third place-winning entry in the Fair Go School Ad Awards. By AMY JACKMAN Need friends? There is an iPhone app for that -- well a group of boys from Hutt International Boys' School think there should be. They entered this year's Fair Go School Ad Awards and placed third in the secondary school category, earning the school a Canon digital camera. Hyrum Modlik, a dancer in the advertisement, says he was not sure what their chances were. I didn't think we would do that good, but then when I watched the show I thought ours was great. It gave me a sense of pride.'' The brief for this year's compe- tition was to create an advertise- ment for a new iPhone appli- cation. Prashan Casinader and Aaron Schomaker came up with the idea of Friend Me, an application which would cure loneliness by giving you friends at the touch of a button. We decided to create something original and funny at the same time,'' Aaron says. We thought that we could do something about a lonely guy and he would have no friends and we could create an app where he'd be able to get friends. We thought of a nerdy name which was Melvin Bosleyworth and started from there.'' The two masterminds then selected a group of students to be in the advertisement. Rob Caldwell played the lonely Melvin Bosleyworth. Prashan came to me and was like I need you to be my person','' he says. I was like Aah, well I don't know what I would do', then he was like No. I wrote it for you'.'' The advertisement was filmed and edited over five hours and Rob says the fact some did not know what they were doing made the advertisement better. I think the craziness makes it. You know? I'm like, I have friends now, thank you Friend Me'.'' Hyrum Modlik says it was fun filming and they ended up with a lot of bloopers. Me and Rob wasted each other a couple of times. I was supposed to chest-pump him when I first see him, but it ended up being more of a pelvic thrust.'' Stephen Woodwark says it would be cool if the app was real. When you're at the bus stop and there's the weird person and you just need someone to talk to; you can just get a friend.''
