The result we all wanted with an absolutely magnificent, tense final and the All Black victory. We certainly saw what it meant for the All Blacks to dig deep, not only playing for themselves and the team but for their country. Every person in that team knowing that they trusted the man inside them or outside them, that they would all do their job to make sure they, and the country, got the result we all wanted. There is no doubt that the Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand has been an absolutely magnificent success. Every town, city, region in this country contributed to the success of one of the world s biggest supporting tournaments. As a country we not only showed that we could host major events, but we also welcomed our visitors and guaranteed our visitors had a wonderful time in New Zealand. Both of those factors will pay huge dividends for New Zealand in the future. Not only did we enjoy the games of the competing countries but we all, and in particular in Upper Hutt, enjoyed the hosting the visitors. So, well done New Zealand! As a member of the Mayors Task Force for Jobs, our organisation is always looking to make sure that young people are not wasted in our communities. As we near the end of the year and young people are looking for employment, I note there are subsidy packages for employers to take on young people in employment. The Wellington region has been allocated 288 positions. At the moment only 27 have been taken up. I urge employers to have a look at the opportunities that your company may have to employ young people with these packages. The youth employment package is a package of initiatives aimed at helping young people find employment. There are three initiatives in the procedure: Skills for Growth. Job Ops with Training. Extension of the Limited Service Volunteer Programme. Skills for Growth is a payment of $5000 that employers can receive to help with the cost of training young, new employees. The stipulation is that the job must be permanent and the employer must commit to support the young employee to achieve a level 2 or higher qualification on the New Zealand Qualifi- cations Framework. The $5000 is paid in three part payments over a 12-month period. The second package is Job Ops with Training, a $5000 subsidy for employers to take on young people with low or no skills. The job must be a continuous six-month employment opportunity with a contribution to help employers to meet wage and training costs for the young person. The employer must develop a training plan that results in skilled development for the young person. The third package for youth is a Limited Service Volunteer programme. This programme provides a six-week residential confidence and motivation building training for unemployed 18 to 24-year-olds where young people develop habits and skills essential for employment. New Zealand Defence Force runs these courses across three locations: Hobsonville, Burnham and here in our city at Trentham. All three are options for young people looking to enter the workforce. We as a community have a responsibility to make sure our young people find employment. Interested employers can either contact me or Work and Income. Pair win grants Upper Hutt locals James Grindrod and Benjamin Murphy have won scholarships as part of the State Apprenticeship and Management Training Scheme which aims to support talent and build capability in the vehicle repair and building industries. James will complete a vehicle repair apprenticeship specialising in collision repair with support from State Insurance while working at Maidstone Panelbeaters. Ben will complete a first-line manage- ment training course with support from State Insurance while working at Silver- stream Panelbeaters. State pays all fees and course-related costs for the apprentices and management trainees as they study towards a national certificate-level qualification. It s important for us as an insurer to invest in the industries with which we part- ner. By offering these scholarships we re boosting talent and creating a strong sustainable industry, State Insurance s executive general manager Mary-Jane Daly says. Qualified and highly skilled trades- people help us provide a better overall ser- vice for our customers, she says. The scheme has been operating for nine years during which it has supported 206 apprentices. In 2009 the management training scheme was introduced for more experi- enced motor employees wanting to further their career in management. Training for automotive repairers is run by the New Zealand Motor Industry Train- ing Organisation.
